Empowering vulnerable and exploited girls in Kenya through education and restorative care.

Every girl deserves the chance to go to school, to play, and to dream.

But that is not the reality for many girls in Kenya.

Child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) are still common and practiced in parts of Africa, including Kenya. Both fall under the definitions of modern slavery and sexual exploitation. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has called child marriage an “under-reported, global form of human trafficking”.

While Kenya has outlawed Child Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), 23% of Kenyan girls are illegally married before their 18th birthday and in certain regions, the percentage is as high as 64%. While Kenya’s national prevalence of FGM is 21%, in some communities it is near universal.

In impoverished areas, many girls are HIV orphans (one or both of their parents died by HIV) and vulnerable to exploitation.

Kenya’s mean years of schooling is 6.6. For comparison, the United States mean years of schooling is 13.4. Poverty, child marriage, child prostitution, and other forms of exploitation is robbing thousands of girls the chance of an education and a good life.

This is the future of many Kenyan girls. We are on a mission to change that.

We rescue and provide restorative care to vulnerable and exploited girls. Their healing journey begins in a safe in and loving environment. Our restorative care includes their housing, food and nutrition, healthcare, trauma-informed therapy, clothing, and recreational activities.

We empower the girls in our care through providing them with a quality education. We assess their individual needs and strengths and help guide them along the best educational path. This includes standard education, vocational school, and college. After they finish their education, we provide transitional support to help them secure a stable job and live independently.

We believe every child flourishes best within a family. As soon as possible, we seek to reunify a girl with safe family members and partner with them to support her healing journey. If family reunification is not possible, we identify other long-term options through foster care or adoption.
